The Fetish Trend: Leather Skirts & Tops

Leather be it in the form of skirts, jackets or the dreaded legging – never a replacement for trousers, ladies – is back and in a big way. It may not be the most flattering of fabrics, VPL is the just the start, but it’s an AW11 essential to covet. Seen on the catwalk of Louis Vuitton, Giles and Mugler – to name a few – leather had a greater fetish appeal than in previous seasons.

Anyone with an ounce of fashion interest will have seen the fetish trend popping up everywhere in the last six months; from Kate Moss at Vuitton in a bondage inspired ensemble to the high-street interpretation with sweaty PVC and more sheer lace than you can throw a Mulberry Alexa at. Leather is an excellent way to channel this trend, without looking like you should be working under a dubious pseudonym at a gentlemen’s club. But as you may have guessed from my intro, I’m not talking leggings.

Mid-length skirts and casual tops make up the latest way to wear leather in a chic, feminine and let’s be honest, easy way. When it comes to fashion trends, translating them into your own closet isn’t always that simple. This is made even trickier when the trend isn’t exactly in it for the long haul – case in point fruit prints, kimono jackets and novelty pom poms – all trends from this year. But rest assure leather isn’t like that. It’s the essential you can always rely on and to use a much-loved pun – it’s not just for Christmas.

Still not convinced? Check out this lovely metallic leather top from ASOS, knitted leather top from Topshop and metallic leater skirt from River Island. Soft, metallic and oh so festive, these leather items will go the distance in your closet. Why not ditch the party dress in favour of a leather skirt or work leather paillettes on your power jumper? Leather is the modern and might I add sophisticated way to do fetish this season – think boudoir Madame less 80s era Right Said Fred. Ticking the fetish trend box has never been so simple and there’s not a whip in sight.
